WHISTLER, Canada -- Finance Minister Taro Aso called on Thursday for the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to take a "calm" stance in considering new tariffs on automobile imports.
Aso made the request during a meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. He also repeated his request that Washington exempt Japan from import restrictions on steel and aluminum, which the Trump administration -- citing national security concerns -- imposed in March.
"Steel products from Japan are of no concern to [U.S.] security," Aso told Mnuchin during the meeting, according to officials accompanying the minister.
Regarding the propsective tariffs on auto imports, Aso told his counterpart that Japanese companies are contributing to the U.S. economy by making direct investments in the country, such as by constructing factories, the officials said.
