Iconic fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto has died at the age of 76, his office revealed Monday.

Yamamoto's office said he died from acute myeloid leukemia on July 21 at a Tokyo hospital, surrounded by his family. He revealed on Instagram in March that he was battling the disease.

Yamamoto was born in Yokohama and in 1971 became the first Japanese designer to have a show in London. His bold use of colors and the avant-garde construction of his clothes earned him international fame.

He is also known for designing stage costumes for British rock star David Bowie, among many other creative projects.

From the 1990s, Yamamoto increasingly directed theatrical productions and large-scale cultural events in Moscow and Hanoi. In 2005, he directed the opening event for the Expo 2005 Aichi, Japan.
