Japanese fairy mascot dies from heatstroke after dance rehearsal in 28C heat

A part-time worker dressed as a fairy mascot at a Japanese them park died after performing dance routine in 28C.

Yohei Yamaguchi, 28, performed the routine for 20 minutes in a 16kg fairy suit during a dance rehearsal at Hirakata amusement park, Osaka, before losing consciousness at 7.30pm last Sunday.

His death follows in the wake of an unseasonable heatwave that has claimed 11 lives on the island nation.

The magical fairy mascot was on stage with ten co-workers when he collapsed.

Emergency workers were phoned at 8pm, but were unable to save him, reports The Asahi Shimbun.

Osaka's police force are investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Yamaguchi's death.

The park's operator has suspended all performances using character outfits, in response to his death.

They have also apologised for the tragedy.

"We will find the cause of it and work to prevent it happening again", said Keihan Leisure Service in a statement.

Japan's meteorological agency said temperatures in the East Asian nation reached 33.2C on Sunday, before dropping to around 82F 28C at 8pm.
