A parliamentarians' league for promoting normalizing relations between Japan and North Korea has decided to resume its activities ahead of a U.S.-North Korea summit meeting scheduled for June 12, sources said.
The suprapartisan group, which is chaired by former House of Representatives Vice Speaker Seishiro Eto, held a board meeting at the Diet on Thursday, in which it decided to resume full-fledged activities for the first time in six years.
The bipartisan group has suspended its activities since the launch of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's second Cabinet in 2012 as North Korea showed a hard-line stance over its nuclear and missile development programs.
With North Korea shifting to a policy of dialogue, there is an increasing possibility of realizing a Japan-North Korea summit meeting following the scheduled U.S.-North Korea talks.
The lawmakers will explore ways to make diplomatic efforts through channels other than the government, a lawmaker of the group said. They had planned to visit North Korea in 2011, but the trip did not take place.
