Hankyu department store has started a nationwide delivery service of famous brand cakes sold in its store's basement food hall with the aim of capturing demand for the home delivery of cakes, which has been growing as gifts and other reasons in spite of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The cakes are sent out for delivery in a frozen state, enabling the first attempt at a nationwide cake delivery service by a department store in Japan.
The delivery service kicked off with five varieties of whole cake, including a Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc tart and a berry tart. Confectioner Henri Charpentier, with its main shop in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, oversees the procedures.
The products are sold at the department store's online shopping site. Prices range from 3,996 yen to 5,940 yen including tax. The shipping cost is 990 yen nationwide and the brand selection is expected to increase gradually.
Hankyu Umeda Main Store in Osaka started the cake delivery service in October last year to a select area. But as the popularity of the service grew, with customers wanting to send cakes to family members living far away, the service was gradually expanded to include more areas.
