NEW YORK -- The Japanese Consulate General in New York has prepared a blank book to let anyone write congratulatory messages to the new Emperor.

Many people have visited the consulate general to celebrate the beginning of the Reiwa era and written wishes of good health for the Emperor and Empress.

More than a dozen people were lined up in front of the consulate general in the middle of Manhattan by 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, when people could enter the building and write in the book. By 4 p.m., 168 people visited the consulate general to write a message, according to the consulate general.

This month, Japanese embassies and consulates in more than 200 places around the world are set to follow suit and let visitors write celebratory messages in books set up on their premises. The consulate general in New York, where there are about 80,000 Japanese residents, will continue to accept well-wishers through Tuesday, except on weekends.
