About 1.25 million households, or only 21.4% of households, in Japan have received the 100,000 yen per person coronavirus cash handout as of June 3, the internal affairs ministry announced on Monday.
According to Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry, 1,740 municipalities in Japan have already started providing the cash payment following applications via the internet or by mail. Only Sarufutsu village in Hokkaido has not started the cash payout. While 90% of residents in some municipalities have received the payout, administrative work has been delayed mainly in large cities.
Also, a number of local governments has stopped accepting online applications for the handout in order to decrease the administrative burden of required confirmations and other tasks.
