Japanese buy final Morse episode

The last Inspector Morse drama, the Remorseful Day, has been sold to a Japanese broadcaster at the MipTV programming market in Cannes.

The two-hour episode, in which John Thaw and Kevin Whately starred as Morse and Lewis for the last time, went out on ITV before Christmas.

Now it has been sold to Japanese broadcaster NHK at MipTV by distributor Carlton International, along with 60-minute documentary the Last Morse, which examines the Morse phenomenon.

Carlton is also doing good business with the Gerry Anderson library of cult "supermarionation" puppet shows.

The latest Anderson show to make a comeback is Stingray, which has been sold to New Zealand broadcaster Prime TV.

A much newer Carlton children's show, STARStreet, has also proved popular in Cannes, selling to broadcasters in France and Singapore.

The 13-part series, which goes out in the UK as part of ITV Saturday morning show SM:TV Live, follows the adventures of pop band allSTARS.

Meanwhile, Granada has sealed two production deals with overseas companies.

Granada Kids has hooked up with the US children's programming producer JP Kids to co-develop up to four shows a year.

Granada and JP Kids will develop children's live-action and animated shows, as well as TV movies aimed at a family audience.

Also in Cannes, Granada International has signed a deal with US/Israeli producer AT Media to co-produce a minimum of 30 hours of factual programming a year.

The partners have agreed to work on projects such as an historical documentary series called In the Footsteps of Moses and a show based on the real-life heroine who inspired Patricia Cornwall's best-selling crime thrillers.
