Japanese billionaire is giving away £7 million to Twitter followers

He’s one of the richest people in the world, and now Yusaku Maezawa says he wants to share his fortune.

The Japanese billionaire, who founded online clothing retailer, Zozo Inc, posted a tweet on January 5, offering to give away 10 billion Japanese yen - or around £7million - to his followers.

The offer has become the world’s most retweeted tweet with more than four million retweets.

Mr Maezawa was offering users the chance to win cash in exchange for re-sharing his post in an attempt to break the record for the most retweets.

His tweet, which was posted in Japanese, translates to: "Zozotown Spring Sale is the fastest in history and topped 10 billion yen!!

“With a daily appreciation, I will give 100 million yen (total of gifts million yen) in cash.

“The only way to apply is to follow me and RT this tweet. The reception is up to 1/7. I will direct DM the winner!”

With over four million retweets, Mr Maezawa’s tweet has pipped Carter Wilkinson’s hilarious tweet to the post to be the most retweeted.

In 2017, Mr Wilkinson tweeted to US fast food chain Wendy’s, asking how many retweets he needed to get a year’s worth of free chicken nuggets.

When Wendy’s replied with the ambitious target of 18 million, Mr Wilkinson called on Twitter for help.

While he didn’t quite reach the 18 million target, he did manage to secure more than 3.5 retweets, and Wendy's gave him the free nuggets anyway!
