Japanese professional baseball players' average salary exceeded 40 million yen (about 371,000 dollars) for the first time, according to the Nippon Professional Baseball Players Association's survey released Monday.
The average salary of 727 players, excluding foreign players, on all 12 teams as of the June 19 start of the season was 41.89 million yen, the highest since the survey began in 1980.
Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks players had the highest average salary for the first time in two years at 71.31 million yen, followed by Yomiuri Giants players at 61.07 million yen and Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles players at 51 million yen.
The team with the lowest average was the Chiba Lotte Marines at 30.35 million yen, 40.96 million yen lower than the average Hawks player.
Central League players averaged 40.50 million yen and Pacific League players averaged 43.26 million yen.
