COVID-19 vaccination venues will increase from June 21, when workplaces and universities will be allowed to host inoculations, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said at a regular press conference on Tuesday.
This will give workers, teachers and students a chance to receive doses of the vaccine while the vaccination of the elderly is ongoing.
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has asked local governments across the country to send out vaccination vouchers for people under 65 from mid-June. Those without the vouchers can receive the vaccine at companies and universities.
"By increasing the number of people receiving the vaccine at companies and universities, it will be easier for others to receive the vaccine at venues organized by municipalities," Kato said. "This will accelerate the vaccination process."
Companies and universities will be required to secure their own doctors and venues for vaccination. In addition to vaccinations at company clinics, small and midsize companies will be allowed to jointly conduct the vaccination at chambers of commerce and other such venues. It will be up to companies to decide whether to include employees' family members in their vaccination program. For workplaces and universities, the vaccine used will be Moderna's.
"When vaccinations are conducted [at companies and universities], if there are elderly people or people with underlying diseases among those eligible, I would like them to have priority to be vaccinated," Kato said.
