Foreign Minister Taro Kono agreed with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday to closely cooperate in urging North Korea to take concrete action for denuclearization, according to the Foreign Ministry.
In telephone talks with Kono, who is currently visiting San Francisco, Pompeo explained the cancellation of his scheduled visit to North Korea and its background. Kono expressed appreciation for the quick notification about the cancellation.
According to the ministry, Kono and Pompeo also confirmed that the two countries will strengthen measures to thwart North Korea's ship-to-ship cargo transfers on the high seas.
A Japan-U.S.-South Korea foreign ministerial meeting, which was being arranged to be held in Tokyo after Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang, has been postponed.
