A partial solar eclipse will be seen across Japan on Sunday, the first visible in the nation since last December.
The further southwest the region, the greater the area of the sun that will be concealed. The eclipse will begin around 4 p.m. and reach its zenith around 5 p.m., covering 79% of the sun in Naha, 42% in Kyoto, 36% in Tokyo and 18% in Sapporo.
Looking at the sun with the naked eye will damage your eyes, so the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan recommends using special equipment, such as glasses specifically made for viewing an eclipse.
The next partial solar eclipse observable in Japan will be in 2023. This will be followed by an annular solar eclipse in 2030, in which the outer circumference of the sun will look like a ring, and a total solar eclipse in 2035.
