Japan to extend state of emergency through May 31

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Monday the government will extend its declaration of a state of emergency through May 31 as infections with the new coronavirus continue to spread.

The declaration was originally set to be in force through May 6.

Even though the state of emergency applies to the entire nation, Abe said consideration will be given to some prefectures to lift it before the end of this month, based on their handling of the infection situation and other factors.
