The government plans to set up a national council of experts and business representatives to achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. In an attempt to increase the momentum among the public, the government is coordinating with the related parties to hold an inaugural meeting in mid-December.
Members of the council will include representatives of environmental and youth-related organizations. In addition to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshi Kajiyama and Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi are expected to attend, as well as other relevant Cabinet ministers.
The council will hear a wide range of opinions for creating a decarbonized society, and will proceed with the discussion from the perspective of reviewing lifestyles. It is envisioned that the council will compile concrete measures and call on the public to take action.
Meanwhile, the prime minister will also set up a forum for consultations among central and local governments by the end of this year to achieve the government's goal.
By discussing the issues in parallel with the national council, the prime minister hopes to promote a "virtuous cycle of the economy and the protection of the environment" in society as a whole.
