Prefectures will receive a total of about 32 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer Inc. from Aug. 30 to Oct. 10, Taro Kono, the minister in charge of the vaccine rollout.
The government will have distributed enough vaccines, including the vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. used in workplace vaccination campaigns, to administer two doses to 80% of the population aged 12 or older by mid-October.
Saitama Prefecture will receive the largest allocation with about 3 million doses, followed by Kanagawa Prefecture and Tokyo. The amount allocated for the capital is relatively low in proportion to its population, taking into account the large number of workplace vaccinations being conducted in Tokyo.
Prefectural governments will be responsible for allocating vaccine supply to local municipalities.
"I want [prefectures] to let cities, towns and villages know how much vaccine they will receive as soon as possible," Kono said at a press conference on Thursday.
