TAIPEI ---- To prevent trouble developing between fishing vessels in a southern sea area close to the Yaeyama Islands, a Japan-Taiwan committee has agreed that Japanese fishing methods will be allowed in one section and Taiwan methods would be allowed in another section.
The committee met on Thursday and Friday in Taipei, to discuss fishing rules around the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture.
The divided fishing activity will be carried out on a provisional basis for the main tuna fishing season from April to July.
Until now, Japanese ships have operated from early morning to afternoon, and Taiwan ships from late night to dawn.
However, problems have occurred under this arrangement.
Japanese and Taiwan fishing vessels use different methods, such as the direction they trail longlines and the space between boats.
After the trial period, experts from both sides will meet to discuss the results and other issues.
In 2013, Japan and Taiwan signed an accord allowing Taiwan boats to fish inside Japan's exclusive economic zone around the Senkaku Islands.
