No. 8 maegashira Asanoyama's stay in sole lead of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament lasted just a day after he was dealt his second loss, leaving him tied with yokozuna Kakuryu after 12 days of action Thursday at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Kakuryu, the lone yokozuna in the tourney, matched the maegashira at 10-2 with three days remaining when he forced out No. 5 maegashira Ryuden (7-5).

Earlier, Asanoyama succumbed to a powerful attack and was pushed out by No. 3 maegashira Tamawashi, who picked up his kachikoshi eighth win.

Sekiwake Tochinoshin (9-3) failed for the second straight day to pick up a 10th win he needs to ensure a return to the ozeki rank, and fell one win behind the leaders when he was forced out by No. 7 maegashira Meisei (8-4).

Meanwhile, ozeki Goeido secured his eighth win by defeating No. 6 maegashira Takarafuji, while ozeki Takayasu dropped to 7-5 after a loss to No. 4 maegashira Abi.
