Japan striker Muto to join Newcastle United

LONDON -- Japan international striker Yoshinori Muto will be plying his trade for the English Premier League side Newcastle United in the upcoming season.

Newcastle agreed to a 9.5 million pounds (about 1.4 billion yen) deal with German Bundesliga side Mainz for the 26-year-old, the BBC reported online Thursday.

Muto moved from FC Tokyo of the J.League to Mainz in 2015. This past season, his third with Mainz in Germany's top league, Muto scored eight goals in 27 games.

Newcastle United finished 10th last season in England's top division.
