Japan starts providing Avigan to 44 countries

The government began Thursday providing new influenza drug Avigan free of charge to 44 countries, including the Philippines, Malaysia and Belgium. The drug is expected to be effective in treating the new strain of coronavirus and there is a possibility that it will eventually be shipped to over 80 countries.

Avigan will be provided by the government through the United Nations within the framework of an emergency aid grant totaling 1 million dollar (roughly 110 million yen).

The quota of 20 patients worth of the medication for each country in principle, and at maximum, enough for 100.

Recipient countries should provide data on the improvement of symptoms to aid in the development of novel coronavirus treatments.
