FUKUSHIMA -- Yu Yamamoto's two-run homer in the fifth inning helped propel Japan's national softball team to an 8-1 win over Australia on Wednesday in the first competitive event of the Tokyo Olympics.

The game was called in the fifth inning.

Held at Azuma Baseball Stadium in Fukushima, Wednesday's game was a symbolic open for the Olympics, highlighting the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake that hit the region 10 years ago.

The opening ceremony will be held on Friday.
