Japan soars at badminton world championships

NANJING, China -- Japan took two gold medals in the badminton world championships on Sunday after winning men's singles and women's doubles.

Kento Momota earned a worlds gold after defeating China's Shi Yuqi 21-11, 21-13 in the men's singles final at the badminton world championships in Nanjing, China, on Sunday.

With his win, Momota brought Japan its first gold for men's singles at a world championships.

Earlier in the day, the tandem of Wakana Nagahara and Mayu Matsumoto won gold, beating another Japanese pair for the women's doubles title.

The duo, making its first appearance at worlds, defeated Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota -- the silver medalists at the 2017 worlds in Glasgow -- by coming from behind 19-21, 21-19, 22-20 in the final.

This is the first time in 41 years that a Japanese duo has won the doubles gold at worlds since Etsuko Toganoo and Emiko Ueno accomplished the feat in 1977.

In the final match of the day, Japanese duo Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda lost to the Chinese pair of Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen 12-21, 19-21 in the men's doubles finals to earn silver.
