Japan sets heat record as Niigata is 1st to hit 40 C in September

The temperature hit 40.0 C at 12:58 p.m. on Thursday in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, marking the first time on record the temperature in Japan has climbed that high in September.

Warm and humid air from Typhoon No. 9 drifted into Honshu, causing a foehn, a warm dry wind that sweeps down from a mountain, over the Hokuriku region that resulted in intense heat that started in the morning hours.

Japan's previous high in September was 39.7 C, recorded in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, in 2000. The JMA warned the public to be mindful of the risk of heatstroke and called for farmers to be careful while taking care of their crops.
