New cases of coronavirus infections surged to 1,260 in Japan on Wednesday, setting a new daily record surpassing the 1,000 threshold for the first time and far exceeding the previous peak of 981 on July 23 and on Tuesday.
However, the numbers of deaths and those in serious condition were far lower than the peak period in April and May.
Nine prefectures, including Osaka and Aichi, marked record figures, and it appears containment of the virus will be a problem.
In Osaka Prefecture, 221 people were confirmed infected, far higher than the previous peak of 155 on Tuesday. In Aichi Prefecture, a record 167 were infected.
Iwate Prefecture, where there had been no confirmed coronavirus cases until Tuesday, had two people who tested positive Wednesday.
Deaths caused by the coronavirus was only four Wednesday, lower than what was seen during the state of emergency from April to May, when more than 10 people died on many days.
Those in serious condition as of Wednesday stood at 81, compared to over 200 in May, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. The number of beds for patients with severe symptoms was sufficient 2,532 as of July 22, leaving enough room to accept patients.
