Japan’s defence ministry said fighter jets were scrambled after Russian planes were detected off its coastline.
According to the ministry, one aircraft travelled from Japan’s north down the west coast on Thursday.
The other plane travelled down the country’s Pacific coastline before departing, the Joint Staff office said.
A statement added: “In response, fighters of the Air Self-Defence Force’s Northern Air Force and other units were scrambled.”
Last year, Japan scrambled jets after Russian and Chinese warplanes neared its airspace.
Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi said at the time that it was the fourth time jets had approached its airspace that year.
No further information was provided regarding the latest incident but it comes days after Japan hosted the G7 Summit.
As the allies met in Hiroshima, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov slammed the meeting, accusing the group of indulging in their “own greatness”.
China’s foreign ministry also released a statement where it claimed the G7 leaders were “hindering international peace”.
