Temperatures soared Sunday in many parts of Japan with the mercury topping 35 C at 176 locations across the country as of 2 p.m.
Over the next few days, the extreme heat may result in temperatures as high as 40 C in some regions.
The day's high exceeded 38 C in western and central regions including Ibigawa, Gifu Prefecture (38.8 C), Kyoto (38.7 C) and Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture (38.3 C) as of 3 p.m., according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Tokyo was also exposed to scorching temperatures with a high of 34.5 C in Chiyoda Ward and 36.2 C in Nerima Ward.
The cities of Hiroshima and Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture -- both of which were hit by the latest rain disaster that mainly impacted the western part of the country -- saw temperatures reaching 33.7 C and 35.3 C, respectively.
The agency is urging people to avoid heat stroke by taking such measures as frequently drinking water and consuming food or drink with adequate amounts of salt.
