Japan's WWII memorial service to be livestreamed on YouTube

The national memorial service to honor those who died in World War II will be livestreamed on YouTube for the first time this year, Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Katsunobu Kato has announced.

The service is be held at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on Aug. 15, but some bereaved family members will not be able to attend because of the spread of the novel coronavirus.

"Livestreaming the memorial service allows those who cannot attend in person to still participate in the ceremony," Kato said at a news conference after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The Emperor and Empress will be in attendance, along with the prime minister and representatives from various fields. This year, the number of attendees will be reduced to about 1,400, about a quarter of the usual number.

The service will be livestreamed on the ministry's official YouTube channel in its entirety, viewable by anyone who has access to a computer or smartphone.
