Travelers with a vaccine passport issued by Japan will receive preferential treatment, such as being exempt from COVID-19 self-quarantine, when entering Italy, Austria, Turkey, Bulgaria and Poland, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said.
"We plan to continue coordinating with other countries and gradually increase the number of countries," Kato said at a Wednesday press conference.
Travelers who present their vaccine passports are eligible for preferential treatment, and the Foreign Ministry's website lists the specific advantages.
Municipalities nationwide will begin accepting applications for vaccine passports on Monday. Applicants submit the appropriate form, along with items including passport details and the vaccination certificate issued at sites after receiving shots, either at a municipal office or by mail.
Vaccination passports, which are free, will be issued in paper form for the time being, but the government is planning to transition to e-applications and e-passports in the future.
