Soccer star Keisuke Honda, who signed with an Australian team earlier this month, has assumed the post of general manager for the Cambodian national team and will technically serve as its coach, the Southeast Asian country's federation of the sport announced Sunday.
Honda is scheduled to take command of matches of the Cambodian national team from September. At the same time, he will play for A-League champion Melbourne Victory, according to the company run by the striker and the Football Federation of Cambodia.
Honda has announced that he would retire from the national team following Japan's World Cup loss in July, rather than aiming to compete in the event four years later.
The soccer star has already engaged in activities in Cambodia, such as operating a soccer school. He has told the federation that he is willing to help develop the country's national team, an offer that prompted the two sides to sign a two-year deal.
"It's a mission for me to promote the fascinating aspects of Cambodia to the world, not just helping the country's soccer be more competitive," Honda said.
