Princess Mako, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, celebrated her 29th birthday on Friday.
While recently spending much of her time at the residence on the grounds of the Akasaka Estate in Tokyo due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, she has been engaging in official duties and other activities online, according to the Imperial Household Agency.
The princess is the honorary president of the Japan Tennis Association and the president of the Japan Kogei Association. In those roles, she listened online to updates about the situation of the two organizations during the pandemic.
When Princess Mako, at her residence, watched the U.S. Open championship in September, which Naomi Osaka won, she was impressed by Osaka's seriousness, the agency said.
Also in September, she visited an exhibition of traditional crafts organized by the Japan Kogei Association as her first official duty outside her residence in about eight months, and presented the president's award at the prize-giving ceremony.
In her free moments between official duties, she has continued her research on museum studies in the doctoral program at International Christian University. She also continues to work as a special researcher at the University Museum of the University of Tokyo.
Two years ago, it was announced that her marriage to Kei Komuro would be postponed to 2020.
"There may be an announcement of Princess Mako's feelings about the marriage, but I don't know when she will do so," said Takaharu Kachi, her close aide and grand master of the Crown Prince's Household.
