Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a tamagushi ritual offering at his own expense to Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo in his capacity as the Liberal Democratic Party president on Wednesday morning, the anniversary of the end of World War II.
Abe refrained from visiting the shrine in person, but LDP member Masahiko Shibayama, a special adviser to the party president, visited the shrine on his behalf. Shibayama told reporters, "I received the [prime minister's] words: 'Please pray sincerely for the souls of our forefathers. I am sorry for not being able to visit.'"
Meanwhile, Seiichi Eto, a special adviser to the prime minister, visited the shrine on Wednesday morning.
