The Japanese Olympic Committee said it would stick to its original goal of winning 30 gold medals, despite difficulties forecasting the medal odds of its international competition following the one-year postponement of the Tokyo Games.
Japan's national team in the Tokyo Olympics comprises a total of 583 athletes and is competing in every discipline over the next two weeks.
However, amid the changing circumstances of the novel coronavirus crisis, Mitsugi Ogata, general manager of Japan's Olympic delegation, indicated that the number of medals itself "is not the ultimate goal."
"We should recognize all the hard work that athletes have put in toward achieving their goals amid the restrictions," Ogata said.
