Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. plans to hire about 5,000 college students who are having financial difficulties primarily due to losing their part-type jobs amid the spread of the new coronavirus, it said Wednesday.

Mitsubishi UFJ plans to start accepting applications in early June. The students will be hired part-time and participate in ongoing surveys on online financial transactions, or engage in testing digital services.

They will be paid tens of thousands of yen for participating in several rounds of of the survey, for example.

In the financial industry, major banks have been forced to compete with IT companies as a result of the advancement of fintech, or the integration of finance and information technology. Through the survey, Mitsubishi UFJ hopes to identify needs for financial services and asset formation among younger generations, and use the findings to develop new services.

The company will work with student support sections at colleges to ensure that truly needy students can apply for the work.

Mitsubishi UFJ also plans to donate 500 million yen each to the Japan Student Services Organization, which provides financial assistance to needy students, and the Ashinaga scholarship foundation for orphaned children.
