The Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association praised the government's interim report on the digital advertising market, saying it shares the same concerns about ensuring transparency and fairness.
The association issued its opinion ono July 27 on the government's interim report released in June. In the report, the government pointed out that the digital advertising market, largely influenced by major IT companies, is changing rapidly and has a complex structure that is difficult to see the true nature of. It also called for the disclosure of advertising prices and the introduction of measures to prevent excessive billing. The association welcomed the interim report, saying, "It's reasonable to ask platform providers to do more."
The government has decided that system and regulation changes by large IT companies could become an abuse of a superior bargaining position, which the Antimonopoly Law prohibits. In its statement, the association urged the government to take appropriate action to solve the problem.
The interim report also referred to the issues of the obtaining and use of personal data by large IT companies. The association urged the government to further discussions on the matter by this winter's final report.
