The House of Representatives approved on Wednesday the revised fiscal 2020 supplementary budget bill, which includes a uniform subsidy of 100,000 yen per person as an emergency economic measure to combat the new coronavirus, paving the way for its enactment Thursday.
The bill, approved at a plenary session by the ruling bloc of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, as well as the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Democratic Party for the People and other opposition parties, was sent to the House of Councillors.
It is expected to be enacted on Thursday after deliberations at the upper house from later Wednesday.
The supplementary budget totaling 25.69 trillion yen includes the 100,000 yen subsidies and a special cash subsidy of up to 2 million yen to small and midsize companies whose sales have decreased by half.
It was rare that Diet deliberations were held on a holiday, making it the first time in nine years when a supplementary budget bill was deliberated for rehabilitation and reconstruction after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
