The ruling Liberal Democratic Party is considering convening an extraordinary Diet session in late October, at which Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga would make his first policy speech since taking up his post, according to sources.
The previous extraordinary Diet session was held for three days, with lawmakers voting to decide the new prime minister. During the next such session, the government and ruling parties intend to seek approval of a new Japan-Britain trade agreement, in addition to hearing Suga's policy speech and posing questions about it, the sources said.
A senior LDP lawmaker said Wednesday it would take about one month to submit the bill to approve the bilateral trade agreement. There is increasing support within the LDP to convene the extraordinary Diet session on Oct. 23 or 26.
The government and ruling parties are also considering presenting another bill to the session that would have the government pay compensation if people who receive vaccinations against the novel coronavirus suffer health problems as a result.
On Wednesday, Suga met with Hiroshi Moriyama, chairperson of the LDP Diet Affairs Committee, and Motoo Hayashi, acting LDP secretary general, at a hotel near the Diet building. They apparently discussed matters including the schedule for the next extraordinary Diet session.
