KYOTO/OTSU -- The bright red autumn leaves of maple trees and the famous wooden stage at Kiyomizudera temple are lit up against the dark sky in Kyoto. The illuminated scenery is an autumn nighttime viewing event at the temple, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, and will continue until Nov. 30.
About 1,000 momiji Japanese maple trees on the grounds of the temple are beautifully lit by about 500 lights of various sizes.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Admission is 400 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students.

Meanwhile, temples and shrines in Otsu are also being lit up to show off the autumn colors.
At Ishiyamadera temple, the Tahoto pagoda, a national treasure, and the more than 1,000 Japanese maple trees of variety called yamamomiji that grow on the premises are all illuminated during a nighttime event. A Japanese-style garden Muyuen is also lit up this year.
The light-up event takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. through Nov. 29. Admission is 300 yen for elementary school students and 600 yen for adults.
