Temperatures continued to climb across Japan on Sunday due to a high-pressure system above the nation, with highs reaching 39 C in at least 4 locations, including Gujo (39.8 C) and Ibigawa (39.3 C), both in Gifu Prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is reiterating its call for the public to take measures to prevent heat stroke, such as regularly drinking water and using air conditioners.
As of 2 p.m. Sunday, the day's highest temperature exceeded 30 C at 662 locations and topped 35 C at 213 places among the total of 927 locations where temperatures are recorded, according to the agency.
The mercury soared in major cities and their suburbs, including Hachioji, Tokyo (37.3 C), Chikusa Ward, Nagoya (38.7 C) and Hakata Ward, Fukuoka (36.8 C).
The severe heat also persisted in areas stricken by the recent torrential rain that mainly impacted the western part of the nation, such as Hiroshima with a high of 34.2 C and Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, which recorded 35.9 C.
