Japan's girls grab Junior Cup crown

TOYOTA, Aichi -- The Japan girls' team emerged victorious at the 2018 Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, on Friday. It was the team's second championship and first in three years.

The team recorded a 22-under 554 in the nine-country competition. Asian rival South Korea finshed in second, 10 strokes behind.

As for individual results in the competition, Yuka Yasuda shared the crown with South Korea's Lee Su Jeong at 10-under 278. Yasuda, a senior at Takigawa Daini High School in Hyogo Prefecture, became the second Japanese winner of the event, after Yumi Matsubara's triumph in 2015.

Yuna Nishimura, a senior at Osaka University of Commerce High School, came in third place with a 9-under 279, while Ayaka Furue, Yasuda's schoolmate, ended in fourth at 6-under 282.

The trio of high schooler seniors looked excited about the victory.

"I'm so happy that I won the individual title," Yasuda said. "I'd like to become a professional golfer in the future and money-title winner."

Yasuda also thanked Nishimura and Furue, saying, "I was able to concentrate because they were doing their best."

In the 15-country boys' competition, Denmark came from behind to win with a 23-under 829, followed by Spain at 21-under 831 and Thailand with a 19-under 833. It was the first time that Denmark claimed victory in the cup's 26-year history. Host Japan came in fourth with an 11-under 841.
