Japan's Foreign Minister to visit Southeast Asian countries

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi plans to travel to Southeast Asia and other regions in mid-August, according to government sources.

Following his Wednesday-to-Friday visit to Britain, Motegi will continue his overseas trips, which had been placed on hold amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

According to government sources, Motegi's itinerary is expected to include stops in Singapore and Malaysia from Aug. 12 to 15, and in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Papua New Guinea between Aug. 18 and 23.

During his visits, Motegi is expected to exchange views with foreign ministers of those countries on such issues as easing immigration restrictions and China's growing maritime activities in the South China Sea.

If Motegi is negative for the virus in PCR testing after he returns from Britain on Saturday, he will be exempt from the 14-day quarantine period required by the government for all travelers entering Japan.
