Japan’s famous cherry blossom season has begun

  • Japan has officially declared the start of its cherished cherry blossom season, with government spotters announcing the first blooms in three cities on Monday.
  • Officials from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed the declaration after inspecting benchmark Somei Yoshino cherry trees in Kochi, Gifu, and Yamanashi.
  • Kochi recorded the earliest bloom for the third consecutive year, appearing six days ahead of its average schedule, while Gifu and Yamanashi bloomed nine days earlier than usual.
