The government and ruling bloc intend to convene an extraordinary Diet session on Oct. 26 during which Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is set to deliver his first policy speech since taking office.
Hiroshi Moriyama, chairperson of the Diet Affairs Committee of the Liberal Democratic Party, told Jun Azumi, Diet affairs chief of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, of the government's intention to do so on Tuesday.
"We would like to hold the session on Oct. 26 through early December," LDP Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai said at a press conference the same day. "We would like to get bills passed into law and carry out politics for the benefit of the people."
During the extraordinary Diet session, lawmakers are expected to debate a proposal to approve a new bilateral trade agreement between Japan and Britain and a bill that would allow the government to cover compensation for possible health problems that may arise from novel coronavirus vaccines, among other issues.
The opposition parties have been taking issue with the prime minister's refusal to appoint six candidates for membership in the Science Council of Japan recommended by council. They are expected to question this issue during the extraordinary Diet session. The opposition is also seeking an explanation from the government at out-of-session meetings slated for Wednesday and Thursday of the Cabinet committee of the House of Representatives and House of Councillors.
