Japan has serious concerns about China's law to allow the use of weapons by vessels belonging to the China Coast Guard and absolutely cannot accept it, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi stressed Tuesday in a meeting at the ministry with Joseph Young, charge d'affaires ad interim of the U.S. Embassy.
Tokyo has so far conveyed its concerns to Beijing, with Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato saying, "It should not be applied in a way that is contrary to international law."
The defense minister used stronger language in the hopes of restraining the Chinese side.
Young said the United States is also trying to share in and promote the "free and open Indo-Pacific" vision.
