Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato observed a test-drive of an unmanned delivery robot on a public road conducted by Japan Post Co. and other organizations near Kojimachi Post Office in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, on Saturday.
The 1-meter-tall wheeled robot can carry loads weighing 30 kilograms at a maximum speed of 6 kph and navigate autonomously based on map data. It can cross intersections by identifying the color of traffic lights and dodge utility poles using built-in sensors and cameras.
Kato watched the robot cross an intersection and later use a QR code to unload packages at the post office.
"We hope to put this robot system into practical use as soon as possible and improve productivity," Kato said.
