Official numbers announced by the Japan Rugby Football Union on Wednesday show that the economic gains far exceeded the original estimates from the previous year.
The economic effects from the 2019 Rugby World Cup came in at a record-breaking 646.4 billion yen while the original estimate from the organizing committee of the Tokyo games was 437.2 billion yen.
The Tokyo games attracted 242,000 foreign spectators, and the economic effects from their consumer behavior amounted to 348.2 billion yen, accounting for 53.8% of the total. The event was 44 days long, and foreign visitors stayed 16 nights on average, spending about 680,000 yen per person. More than 60% were first-time visitors to Japan and around 75% of the total arrived from Europe and Oceania.
Another record set was the amount of tickets sold -- coming in at 99%, or about 1.84 million.
Including accommodation charges, eating and drinking expenses and venue maintenance fees, the direct economic benefits stood at 315.7 billion yen.
The primary indirect economic effects due to the provision of related services and others totaled 217.2 billion yen, while the secondary indirect economic effects due to consumption rise as the result of an increase in employment amounted to 113.5 billion yen.
