Japan, the United States and South Korea have begun to coordinate a meeting of their foreign ministers to be held in conjunction with the Group of Seven foreign ministers' meeting in Britain from May 3 to 5, government sources said.
The three countries are expected to confirm their cooperation on the issue of North Korea's nuclear and missile development.
This will be the first meeting among the three countries' top diplomats since February 2020.
The meeting will be attended by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong. South Korea is not a member of the G-7, but was invited to the meeting by Britain, which chairs this year's G-7 meeting. According to the sources, the U.S. side is leading the coordination of the three-way meeting.
Motegi is also expected to hold bilateral talks with Blinken. It is unclear whether there will be a meeting between the foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea as the bilateral relation has worsened recently.
