The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients increased to a record 1,235 in Japan on Monday, up by eight from Sunday, according to a preliminary report by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.
The figure has surpassed 1,200 for the sixth consecutive day.
Tokyo logged 732 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, down by 193 compared to the previous Tuesday, the metropolitan government said. It was the fourth straight day that the daily figure was lower than the same day from the previous week.
The moving average of the past seven days was 756.9 in Tokyo on Tuesday, down 8.2% from 824.3 of the previous week. The number of seriously ill patients decreased by 4 to 81 on Tuesday from Monday.
