The Foreign Ministry updated its Overseas Travel Safety Information on Tuesday, placing 13 countries, including Mexico, on Level 3, or "Avoid all travel," in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Travelers from a total of 100 countries and regions will be subject to refusal of entry into Japan if these 13 countries are added to the list of countries from which travelers are to be refused.
The 13 countries are Mexico, Maldives, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uruguay, Colombia, Bahamas, Honduras, Cape Verde, Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, and Equatorial Guinea.
The Japanese government will soon refuse entry into Japan to foreigners who have been in those countries within the last two weeks, as it already does for other Level 3 countries and regions, and will conduct PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests on those who do enter Japan.
Level 3 is part of the ministry's four-level Overseas Travel Safety Information system, which consists of Level 1 (Exercise caution), Level 2 (Avoid nonessential travel), Level 3 (Avoid all travel) and Level 4 (Evacuate and avoid all travel).
