Japan's pro baseball leagues will open the much-delayed season on June 19, with no spectators allowed in the stands for the time being, it was announced on Monday.
Nippon Pro Baseball Commissioner Atsushi Saito made the announcement in an online press conference following a meeting by teleconferencing of representatives of the 12 teams.
The opening of the season was predicated on the lifting of the government's state of emergency, which had been decided and was to be announced later in the day.
The regular season in the Central and Pacific leagues had been scheduled to start March 20, but was postponed due to the spread of the new coronavirus.
The teams continued to meet in search of a solution, and along the way canceled interleague games, which had been scheduled to start May 26, and the All-Star series slated for July 19 and 20.
