Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Thursday morning praised the inaugural address given by new U.S. President Joe Biden, calling it "a very powerful speech that appealed to the people for unity."

Suga then expressed his desire to build a relationship with Biden. "I want to work closely with the new president to realize a 'free and open Indo-Pacific,' and on international issues such as the novel coronavirus and climate change," he said.

The prime minister spoke in response to questions from reporters at his office.

Regarding phone talks with Biden, Suga said, "we're working to set that up at an appropriate time."
